Arte moderna e contemporanea. Galleria Carlo Virgilio was founded in 1979 on the occasion of the Disegni romani di figura (1800 – 1870) exhibition, one of the first national events dedicated to neoclassical and academic drawing. Since then the gallery has held over a hundred exhibitions and produced as many catalogues with eminent Italian and European specialists. The rich documentary records of Galleria Carlo Virgilio are the result of thirty years’ work collecting information and photographic archives covering tens of thousands of subjects. The gallery’s expertise was originally focussed on drawings dating from the end of the 18th century to the first decades of the 20th century. When art historian Stefano Grandesso joined Galleria Carlo Virgilio he expanded the gallery’s field of expertise to include 19th century western sculpture and painting. In addition to private collectors, the gallery counts among its clients Italian and International museums such as the Venice Academy, Galleria Nazionale delle Marche in Urbino, Reggia in Caserta, Palazzo Mansi Museum in Lucca, Museo Napoleonico in Rome, Galleria Palatina di Palazzo Pitti in Florence, Louvre in Paris, Musée de la Révolution Française in Vizille, Musée de l’Armée in Paris, Hamburger Kunsthalle in Hamburg, Chicago Art Institute and the Wolfsonian FIU in Miami Beach.
