Black Atlantic: Power, People, Resistance

The Fitzwilliam Museum, Trumpington St, Cambridge CB2 1RB

By bringing together collections from across the University of Cambridge's museums, libraries and colleges with loans from around the world, Black Atlantic: Power, People, Resistance asks new questions about Cambridge's role in the transatlantic slave trade and looks at how objects and artworks have influenced history and perspectives. This exhibition explores some new stories from history - stories that help us to separate fact from fiction and history from myth.

This exhibition, the first major retrospective of Hals in more than thirty years, means a new generation can discover why he deserves his place as one of the greatest painters in Western art.

Held at Palazzo Bagatti Valsecchi, Milan, the exhibition presents the Bolognese master (1890-1964) in dialogue with two contemporary artists, the glass sculptor Joan Crous (1962) and the painter Andrea Federici (1957). Morandi's silent art, his rare ability to investigate what lies behind the appearance of the humblest and most ordinary things, the silence of his compositions, have never ceased to exert a strong influence on the artists of subsequent generations, who have declined his magisterium in different ways.

The group of objects presented in this exhibition date from the early ninth century through to the seventeenth century, and is connected by an important thread: the continuous assimilation of Islamic aesthetics, craft technology, luxury objects and culture into the European visual repertoire.

As part of the series of 'Discover' exhibitions, which explore well-known paintings through a contemporary lens, the National Gallery reunites, for the first time in 250 years, Swiss painter Jean-Etienne Liotard's pastel and oil versions of 'The Lavergne Family Breakfast'. With the pastel and oil works side by side, this exhibition is a rare opportunity to compare the difference in technique and effect between the two.

On Tuesday 21st November we unveiled a collection of exquisite, limited edition linocuts by Rory Hutton.

Rory Hutton is an artist and designer working primarily through the medium of linocuts.
 
Inspired by history, gardens, opera and antiques, Rory has collaborated with major institutions including The British Museum, The Wallace Collection, Buckingham Palace, The V&A, The Royal Opera House, and Highgrove.
 
During 2020 Rory began to explore his love of gardening and this work has developed from this period.  'Living in a small flat without a garden or even a balcony, I came up with my own project inspired by some of my favourite gardeners of the twentieth century and I set about gardening vicariously through them.' 
 
This exhibition celebrates Rory's love of gardens and will be the first dedicated show of his original linocuts.

Personal vignettes from a life in Hong Kong, Shetland, and travels in Italy. Ron Sandford's paintings communicate his lived experience of these culturally and geographically distinct environments through commonplace items, often before deftly captured backdrops. For 30 years, Ron illustrated books and newspapers and undertook large scale architectural commissions such as Bishopsgate, London. He has taught at the Royal College of Art, Central School of Art and Design, St. Martin's School of Art and Brighton School of Art. From his studio on Yell, Shetland, he draws the everyday, every day: still life, landscape and portrait in pencil, pen, ink and watercolour.

Discover an overlooked Renaissance great in the first-ever exhibition dedicated to Francesco Pesellino (c.1422-1457). Uniting his two undisputed masterpieces from the National Gallery Collection - the Pistoia Trinity altarpiece (1455-60), and the newly restored 'Stories of David' cassone panels (about 1445-55) - with key loans, this exhibition presents an opportunity to uncover more of Pesellino's story, and appreciate his skill as a painter of complicated stories, ceremonial splendour and exquisite detail.
