All are was contemporary once…
Our online show includes a wide range of continental European paintings from the 19th and early 20th centuries, spanning a range of styles, eras and artists. Works by masters such as Baron François Gérard hang alongside pictures by lesser known painters like Karl Sterrer and Friedrich Dürck. Our aim is to highlight the works of lesser known artists and show them in the context of other well established painters to allow our understanding and knowledge of European art history to expand beyond a list of recognisable names and to show that, like today, the depth of talent in art was broad and wide ranging. In the world of contemporary art we are far more likely to accept a new and hitherto unknown artist in a way we perhaps are less likely to do with older pictures, but let us not forget…all art was contemporary once.
