Giambologna 1529-1608, Sculptor to the Medici, exh. cat., Victoria and Albert Museum, London, and elsewhere, 1978, pp. 140-142 .
FURTHER INFORMATION: This Christ is very close to the crucifix in the Convent of Santissima Annunziata, Florence, a work by Giambologna dating from 1578 and the archetype of the Cristo vivo. The origin and development of crucifixes in Giambologna's workshop is discussed in the catalogue of the 1978 Giambologna exhibition. The sculpture shows Christ still alive, raising his head to heaven and uttering the last words from the cross. The present bronze is a very fine cast, refined in both its modelling and chased details. A close parallel, also of a small size, is the bronze n. 100 in the 1978 Giambologna exhibition.
